CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
TIM
This day is not turning out to be what I expected. I thought Iâd come into the club, work on the Valentineâs menu, check in with Terry about our flower delivery, and then maybe kick back in my office and play some video games until it was time for tonightâs mixer. I did not expect Paige and Jake to be on some kind of cooking date.
Iâm pacing nervously around the lobby when Terry approaches me. âIf that cheeseburger casserole tastes as good as it smells, we should put it on the lunch menu.â
âNo.â
âWhy?â
âBecause, Terry, country club women do not eat cheeseburger casserole. Can you see Mrs. Vanderhaven hunkering down to a piping hot bowl of fat and cholesterol?â
He shakes his head. âNo, but Mr. Vanderhaven would.â Heâs got a point. The men at the club seem far less concerned about health than their wives are.
I amend my answer to, âMaybe.â Then I ask, âDid you need me for something?â
Terry hands me a sheet of paper. âI went ahead and printed out a sample menu for Valentineâs dinner.â
âI thought we were going to work on that together.â I sound like planning sustenance for couples in love is my lifeâs greatest desire. Which it is not.
âWe can always change it if you want.â He gestures at me like heâs waving away a foul smell. âYou seemed to have a lot on your mind.â
âHow long have you been married, Terry?â
âFourteen years and two months,â he says proudly.
âNot that it's any of my business, but have there been any big bumps?â
âCandy has had three.â I wait eagerly hoping heâll explainâand he does. âTerry Jr., Masie, and Clara.â
âHahaha.â
âBut you want to know if weâve had any big fights,â he guesses correctly.
âItâs not my business and you donât have to tell me.â Please tell me.
âSure, weâve fought.â Terry pats me on the back. âNo one has a smooth ride all the time. The thing with marriage is that you both ultimately have to want the same thing. Thatâs what makes a good partnership.â
I walk over to the sitting area and plop down on one of the love seats. Terry follows. âI agree with you. Iâm just scared to give it another shot.â
Sitting down next to me, he says, âYou have a right to be. Eva really screwed you over. But you canât let her actions dictate your happiness. Youâve got to take your power back.â
âIâm only doing this show to get even with her,â I confess.
I expect him to tell me the same spiel Paige and Cami were preachingâa happy life is the best revenge. So Iâm surprised when he says, âYou deserve to have your revenge. And if showing Eva youâre over her is what you need to do, you should go for it.â
âBy flirting with other women?â
âUnless youâve decided youâre into dudes.â He laughs before adding, âThat might be even better revenge.â
Iâm not sure how that would be true, and I donât bother to ask. âI donât want to lead anyone on.â
âThere are no guarantees for anyone who goes on a dating show.
